Letters.  How often do you get a handwritten letter in the mail? Once or twice a year? Maybe even less often.

That is why I am doing today’s post about letters, and not just any letters, elegant letters that demonstrated deep appreciation and friendship of the giver.  Nowadays, it seems easier to send email, text messages, and even snap chats of what we are up to. However, there is something lost. And I believe what is lost is the physical contact. You cannot hold an email. The writing in that email is standard, and doesn’t show the individual handwriting of the sender. The message is sent quickly, without the anticipation that comes with actually sending and receiving letters.

Last summer, I did a little experiment, and created a  Lost Arts Society with my friends. I would seen them letters on a particular topic, and then they would have to write to another friend about that topic.  I loved doing  this, but I wasn’t too good at making sure if the other friends responded to each others letters.  I knew that this letter writing would not last, as school would start and many  of my friends would not have the time to write letters to each other. So I wrote the last letter in August, promising that the Society will start up again in the summer of next year.

Nevertheless this letter writing experiment helped me greatly appreciate the elegance of letters. It was rewarding for me to write these letters every Sunday or Monday morning, and stick them in envelopes, put stamps on them and put them in the mailbox, knowing that my friends will anticipate them and most importantly treasure them.

So  as I gear up to start the society again ( I know that I am a month late!), I hope you take the time and consider writing a letter to your friends. I know that they would be surprised, but appreciate it immensely.  More posts on how to recover letter writing in future posts. Stay tuned!
