Finding Joy in the Simple Things

Hello lovelies,

Today’s post is about finding joy in the simple things.

As we have all been unable to do the things that we normally do, I thought it would be a great time to just take a step back and really enjoy the simple things of life. Things that we often miss because we are too busy or distracted to see, such as the beauty of nature, the lovely scent of freshly laundered sheets, the gentle breeze, the sunrise or sunset.

Since I have slowed down during the month and a half of self-isolation, I have found joy in gardening, folding laundry, sewing, things that I did enjoy before, but not in the fullest, because my mind was preoccupied and cluttered with the other tasks and cares of the day. There is unpreceded joy in simplicity. During these months of transition, I have found that I enjoy just being. I didn’t pressure myself to do as much work or study as a usually do. I just focused on being in the moment. Doing this, I found that the things that I used to think were a hassle, gave me joy.

So how can you find joy in the simple things?

Well just keep on reading. I have complied a little list so that you can start learning how to find joy in the simple things. So let us start with the first one.

Focus on one Thing Fully

So often we are doing two or three things at once. Because of the constant distraction, we are not fully engaged in any one task. And because of multi-tasking we feel more overwhelmed. I have found that I work so much better when I devote all my attention to one specific task. I also find more joy in what I am doing.

Limit Distractions

Try not to do more than two things at a time. I know that when I am fully focused on the task I am doing, such as folding laundry, cleaning, preparing dinner, or gardening, if I am distracted by something else, I don’t fully engaged with what I am doing with my hands. And that makes me forget the pleasure of the task I am doing.

Spend time with your Love Ones

Some of our best memories are when we are with the ones we love. This is usually because we are focusing our attention on being with our family. When we are with family, we are usually finished with work and ready for some quality time and relaxation. I know some of my best memories are when I was doing something fun or a physical activity with my family. Some of my favorite things to do with my family are going for a walk or bike ride or just spending the evening watching a movie and talking.

Do acts of Kindness

To truly see the joy in simplicity, do a small act of kindness for someone else. Because you are doing an act of kindness, it makes what you are doing more enjoyable, because you know it isn’t for your benefit, but for the benefit of someone else. The act can be as simple as making someone’s bed, making breakfast or dinner, filling up the car with gas, anything that you know that will make the person you know and love feel loved.

Spend Time in Nature

The best way to find joy in simplicity is to spend time in nature. Nature is so beautiful without anything extravagant done to it. When I spend some time in nature, I appreciate the beauty of nature and I feel more alive. I see the craftmanship of our Creator. I am reminded that our lives are so fleeting, and that we must focus on what is important, what we will want to remember at the end of our lives. So I encourage you to spend some time in nature, it is a great place for reflection.

I hope that you will put these tips to good use. I know I shall. If you have any more tips on how to find joy in simplicity, let me know in the comments.

As always, have a great rest of your week,

Alyssa
